Review:This week I will post everydays a part of this tutorial... It's done, already... And it means that I know perfectly this App... (Excepted 1 little thing that I still not understand... Check it out in the Audio Track tutorial below..) 1 It's not the most powerful of the DAW, despite this: 3 inserts per track. Unlimited groups... Audiobus, IAA and AudioUnit (Intrument tracks and Fx) A lot of built in Plugins, others from the Shop. 2 It's not the most revolutionary UI, despite this: You don't need to read the User Manual, everything is simple... Not a lot if windows... A little bit like Protools... I love this... 3 It's not the most powerful Audio and MIDI Editor, despite this: One more time, for the Audio and MIDI Editors, no need to read the manual. Most of all the features I need are present. Perhaps the Time Stretching for an Audio Clip. I can also change the way I am writing... It's among and perhaps even the most "easy to use" Pro DAW from the App Store! It's my second DAW. And sometimes also my unique DAW. I am Beta Tester for Auria Pro, I have to install and uninstall it a lot of time. Auria is also heavy, and sometimes I need space in my iPad. So I remove it... But I keep Audio Evolution into my iPad. Audio Evolution is very study too... I need this.... A Killer App, a Must Have!
Review by Ed 1 Menu ProjectA real File browser... You can import easily MIDI and Audio from a project to another. You can Mixdown a project, send all rendered tracks to another DAW, export a MIDI file. Create and load Templates, Sure, load and save a Project... Import from Audio Share too... Overview and Tracks2 ways to create a Track:
Or you choose to import Audio or MIDI from another project. A track will be created . Or you Tap the + button located on the bottom right side of your screen. 4 choices here: Audio Track, MIDI Instrument Track, Drum Pattern Track or MIDI track. Note that I didn't understand how to create a Stereo Audio track... To create it, I import a stereo Audio file from Audioshare into Audio Evolution. All the tracks come with a Volume, a Pan, A input Routing, 3 inserts (Audio Unit or IAA plugins), 2 send to the groups (you can create unlimited groups). A 3 band EQ excepted for the MIDI Track. 1) Audio Track The input Routing allows you to insert an App. (Audiobus or IAA) Audio will be recorded. The track menu allows you to rename a track (You can also rename a track by a long tap on the note label.) To remove it. To move it up or down. To copy the track to the clipboard. To render the Audio to Audio File. 2) The MIDI Instrument Track It's exactly the same track as an Audio Track. Just after you have created it, you will have to choose the "Guest" App or the Audio Evolution built-in Sampler. (We will see this later) A shortcut on the trackhead allows you to switch to an IAA App or to the Audio Evolution keyboard if you have choosen an Audio Unit instrument. The Track menu displays the same things as the Audio Track plus a Translate by semitones, a Split Midi Channel and Merge All Clips features. This track record MIDI. 3 & 4) The MIDI track and the Drum Pattern tracks are the same. Only the MIDI Editor is different. (We will see this later) The Track menu is the sale as the MIDI Track instrument. The imput routing is for the MIDI destination and source.

Warning! When I am making the Let's open it together post, I don't know the App... I also didn't read the App Store description before... So, I want to apology if I am saying mistakes or if there are "lengths" in the Video or in my writing below. Check out the App Store description at the end of this post... If you have this App feel free to add infos, clarification, even to injury me (not too much) in the comment section below... Intro: as usual I didn’t know this App before to make this video... I read the App Store description just now. If I am talking about this it’s because I was not really sure to know the real purpose of this App after that I made this video. Now, I know... Concept: a visual synthesizer ( and much much more... Check out the App ID below...) First impressions: Top! It seems to be really powerful and despite this very easy to understand. Sound quality: It seems to be great! Really..... Audio Processing: I didn't try a lot of thing in this video... I shaped a little bit the sound of the Synthetiser,... It's seems to be great... Features: check out the App ID below. There is one thing that I didn't see before to make the video, it's the Audiobus or IAA features... I will ask the developer.... This App seems to be really great, so it's too bad if we can use it with an host App... UI: I love it... Unique, beautiful and easy to understand... Conclusion: I will play a little bit more with Mazetools,... I want! I will add a new video shortly... This App seems to be really really great... This App allows we you to create a song very easily and fast. Everyone can use it. Pro musicians and beginners as well. Medly works a little bit like Garageband. I explain... First you create a new Project. Set the Scale and the Tempo. You create a new track. A Midi or an Audio track . You select the instrument you like. Then, you have 2 choices. Or you edit a blank pattern or you choose a pattern from the Library. Each packs from the Medly store comes with Audio loops and MIDI melodies and rhythms. The developer offers me the Master Pack: 150 audio loops, 450 Midi patterns, 30 instruments. (Thanks a lot!) I didn't have the others packs excepted the Starter one, but there are also a Rock, Jazz and Classical instruments Packs in the Medly Store. Audio track and Audio editing: At this moment, you can not import an Audio File into the App, but this feature will be add shortly. You can record audio with the built in microphone of your iDevice. You can trim an Audio File. Midi and Midi Sequencer: A Midi in feature. No output. The sequencer works like most of all the MIDI sequencers. Tap to add a note, again to delete. Tap to add a note then swipe to the rigth to set its length. Tap and hold a note to set the accent (3 level). A snap feature is also available. Track settings & FXs (Audio & Midi): Volume, Pan, Echo, Reverb, Ducker, High / Low, and Pitch. Delay rate 1/4, 1/8 & 1/16. No other Settings for the effects. Automation: All the track parameters can be automated. That's all! And enough! To conclude: For Pro musicians,s first: Are you using Garageband? For myself: never... (the only reason why I would like to reinstall Garageband into my iPad is Alchemy...) Garageband is an hybrid App. Too many features for a beginner and not enough for a Pro musician. Sometimes a friend ask me for a track.... Sometimes my muse is going to visit another Galaxy... Sometimes,... Sometimes it's cool to have an App like this. Very easy to use. A lot of melodies and grooves and a very good Audio sample's quality for all instruments. For beginners: All the things that you need to create a track are in this App. Only 10 minutes to understand how Medly works. Not too many menus, settings,... So, you will never be lost. I like the concept and I don't want to have too many features in the future updates. Perhaps only one or two more with the import Audio one. The ability to record the audio from another App and the ability to import a Midi file. That's all. For me, it's enough. A Killer App, a Must Have have for beginners. An App that Pro musicians must have to remember the day when their muse is travelling to another Galaxy.
Notes:
I had the answer and the solution too. If you launch Medly first and after the host App, no problem the signal will be recorded. Top! There is a bug. Sure, but at the end not really annoying... The developer will fix it. The update will be released at the begining of the next year. So, don't worry, no problem! Here us the video. Tap the icon below to jump to the Medly review. Review by Ed This is the tutorial 4 / The Sample page Wahoo! Awesome! One thing that I really really love is the Slices to Pads (Create Pattern) feature! Check out the video demo! Also, the Mapping page is great... Fast and easy to understand. As usual you will be able to insert a lot of plugins to a layer or a Pad. Also use the ADSR or AHD... The recorder and the "Move to next Pad" feature is great! BeatMaker is very powerful. Certainly the most powerful DAW from the App Store. A lot of features, but once you know them, it's easy to navigate inside Beatmaker 3. Next Tutorial the Audio Track.
Edit Sample Page Here you will be able to edit your Audio files. First, you will have to select the Layer and the associated audio file. By a Tap on the Edit button, your audio will be displayed in full screen mode. Edit function: Trim audio (zero to Snap / Snap to grid / no Snap) Copy / Paste Fade in & out / Silence / Time Stretching / Reverse / Stereo to mono Playing mode: No loop / Normal Play / Alternated Live Stretch & disc streaming Slice: Auto Slice Delete, copy & paste Slice Slices to Pads / Create Pattern Here is an awesome feature! In 2 minutes you will be able to slice an audio file (split or Grid), then to send all the slices to Pads and create a pattern too! Check out the video demo. Slice to Single or Multiple layers / Slices to Apple Loop Record Here also a great feature. You can auto assigned a new recording to the next Pad, in Synthesizer mode or not! ADSR OR AHD / 9 EQ Filters for each layers Layers Fx For each layer: Overdrive / SV Filter / Invert Phaser & Bit Crusher Modulations 1 more ADSR OR AHD per layer / the re trigger switch / Layer Gain & Tune setting Mapping I love this page. So easy to map your Sample on the keyboard! Plugin
You can insert an Audiobus, Audio Unit or IAA plugin to a Pad (More with Audiobus, AUM,... Check out below) An App that I really love… An old one. 5 modules. A Midi Drum & Bass loop player. (33 loop styles). For the Drum module: a cut-off, a resonance, a bit shift (with A bits and rate parameters). For the Bass, an Octave selector, 4 waveforms types, a bitshift, a cut-off, a resonance and an ADSR. Also a switch to lock the Bass on the root note. A melodic keyboard (ribbon) named Strum located on the right side with an Octave selector, 4 waveforms types, a bitshift, a cut-off, a resonance and an ADSR, a Tremolo depth and speed, a pitch wheel stiffness and a switch to enable a touch pressure with a pressure gain. 16 scale types are available. (The scale key will follow the Chord you are playing). The Chord module comes with the same parameters excepted for the scale. You select a Major and minor Chord as well as the root note above the 9 big Chord's Knobs (Pads) available. A knob allows you to play 8 chords types. To finish an Arpeggiator with 4 waveforms types, a volume slider, cut-off, a resonance and an ADSR, a Bitshift, a Rhythm selection menu and a Arpeggiator type: Random, Up, Down, Up Down. This is all for the modules. A Mixer is also available (Volume only). You can save your setting (Palettes), record your performances and share them to Soundcloud. Four switches allows you to recall a Palette but there is a bug here. You can also change the colour of the UI but there is also a bug here. All the modules can send MIDI notes to another App. This turns polychord into a Chord Midi Controller Too! A Powerful one! For the sound, I love it. I really really love it so much that I used it a long time ago to create a soundtrack for a TV documentary…. I love this App! I really love it. I didn't make its review at this time, but if I had done it, sure that I would have rated it as a Killer App for Composers. For beginners also because of its ease to use. With the Midi out feature and the last update that made it an iOS 11 ready App, it becomes a Must Have too!.
Review by Ed BeatHawk is a 16 tracks Drum Machine, or Soundboard, or DrumPads, or Sequencer or a Workstation. The App is so well done that you can use it as you like. So well done that the Audio Unit version allows you to do exactly the same things that you can do with the Stand Alone version. Note that it is not so usual... On the main window, 16 Pads. On their left side, a Volume button: Tap it and play the selected Pad (track) with the 16 Pads. Each Pads come with a different volume setting (from 7 to 127). A Mute button allows you to Mute all the desired Pads. The Scale window turns BeatHawk into a real sequencer because of its two one octave keyboards. Yes, unlike a lot of Drum Machines, here you can play chords, select a scale and the root note as well. Top! A little further down, the Erase button, the Select and the Repeat (Pad) button. On the other side, the Edit window where you can load a Sample from the Library (you can also import your own samples from here),.set the pan, pitch, and gain of the selected Pad. Also, a Delay, a Reverb, a LP and HP Filter send slider. (The parameters for these 4 FXS can be found in preferences menu). A Record window where you can record the input signal, an ADSR window, a Sample window where you can Trim and Stretch a sample. The Pattern window where you can select a Pattern, copy it and paste it, set its length from 1 bar to 16 bars, and the shortcut to jump to the sequencer. Here also a great feature... depending of the way you are using BeatHawk, or the track you like to edit you can switch ftom a conventional sequencer (select a track and the grid editor will display the note's pitch on the vertical axis) or the "Drum Machine" sequencer where all the tracks are display on the grid. The song mode is really great too and here also a great feature which allows you to mute or not a track from a Pattern. In summary, BeatHawk is more than very well done... BeatHawk is very, very, very well done. Very very easy to use. You can automated all the parameters. The Audio Unit version is awesome and impressed me a lot... Before to say the magic quote, I have to talk about the online Store. so many Packs there.. so many kinds of packs... middle east, asia, vintage keynoards, piano,..(Check out the last section of the tutorial below). So, it's time to say the magic quote now: A Killer App, a Must Have!
No time to delve into the big and serious music apps? PixiTracker is what you need! It is a simple and fun tool to quickly create musical sketches, chiptunes and sound experiments. Without requiring a lot of musical knowledge! This is the description of PixiTracker in the App Store. Sometimes I add the description of an App because I think that it is explained better that I can do (with my perfect English), but this time it is for another reason. When I read it, I can think that this App is not for me. I mean a "Pro musician", but no, it's not true! The App is very well done, the UI makes it easy to use, Because of this it is sure that you don't need to be an expert in music softwares (Apps) to use it but it it comes with all the features that I need to make music with my iPad. More, the sounds library (samples) turn it into an unique and Must Have App for chiptunes. PixiTracker is a sequencer. From 1 to 12 tracks and 8 to 64 steps. 16 samples can be loaded per project. You can record your samples with the built in microphone of your iDevice, or the line in if you are using an audio interface. You can also paste a sample from Audio Share or Audiocopy. PixiTracker comes also with a song mode, very well done. A simple Sample editor and a powerful System settings that allows you to customise the UI. I really love this App. Everytime that I use it, I have fun and I am able to create something. A Killer App, a Must Have!
Review by Ed dot Melody is a kind of sequencer. An unique one. I have a little problem to explain why I love this App so much because there is a lot of things that you can not do with it but because of this dot Melody is an awesome App.... So, dot Melody is a Midi sequencer. 3 tracks only! 3 "monophonic" tracks! (Lead, Bass & Drum). It means that you can not play chords, a kick with a close Hi-hat... it got me somewhat destabilized initially, trying to program a classic drum pattern... The grid is "weird" too... The vertical axis set the note duration, the horizontal one the pitch. On the left side of the screen, you can choose the Chord (scale), on the right side, the patterns selection. You can create as much patterns as you like. In the option menus, you can set the Time signature, the Scale, the Root note, the Chords (scale) and create custom one. Add a Delay for a track and a Reverb to the whole mix. All the parameters can be change in play mode. You can also generate a random pattern, randomise one, and play it in reverse mode. In summary: with dot Melody you can create a melody very fast, with fun and a really great sounding. Even if it's a Midi sequencer, I prefer to use the internal preset. I really love them...). You can also use dot Melody as a random music generator, or a Drone. A Killer App!
Review by Ed It was the first time that I rated an App from XME as a Killer App... I am not a big fan of all the recording studio Apps from XME, but this one came with some features that I really loved: The ability to extract the Audio from a Youtube video / the ability to record an online radio... I try to find in the App Store if this App has been rename, but I didn't see another App from XME with these features... Published on 24 Sep 2013 Studio 2 is really different from the other Recorder or Workstations on the App Store... The purpose is not the same as a recorder like Auria or Multitrack Daw, and nor the same as a Workstation like Meteor or BeatMaker 2. For the recorder section, you only have 2 Effects: A Reverb and a Delay (2 Busses). The editor is also really simple : Copy, Cut, Split / Fade in & out... But the others don't have what follows ... 96 tracks! The possibility to extract the Audio from a Youtube Video, the possibility to recordan online Radio. Drag the bottom handle of an Audio track to repeat it! And this that the others have: the Audiobus and the Open in features, Automation for the Volume and Pan. Great! I said that it is also a Workstation because it comes with an internal MIDI module: the BeatPad. For 4.49€, you can unlock and download all the available Sounds. A big, very good quality, library of sound with a BeatPad as a DrumPad, no keyboard, but all the samples from a tune instrument are assigned to each of the 16 Pads. You also have some Chords kits (Major, minor...). For the editing, just a quantise feature. To conclude, Studio 2 is very well done and I really love its UI, very clear... Sure, that a Pro musician could be disoriented by the lack of some features, but for myself, I will keep it on my iPad 4 and also instal it on my other iDevices, because I really love its ease of use. The possibility to work with so many tracks. There is however two things that I would really love to have in a future update: an undo button and an input monitor... A Killer App! (I'm sure that it can be better and better with time, still keeping its originality). (There are also some little bugs, but it is a new born App... so it is normal...) Review by Ed A lot of changes since this review... 5 days after, Audiobus support has been added. 1 month later, the Core Midi. November, 15th 2013 migration of RD4 from a Paid App to a Free one with an offer in app purchases. In December of the same year, the integration of the Novation Launchkey mini. One year later, in December 2014 the Ableton Link support. In February more Drum Kits were added. The last update was released this year, in May. The 2.3.6 version: bugs fixed. Published on 20 Sep 2013 RD4 is a little workstation. 4 Tracks. It comes with 1 Synthesizer, called Analog: 3 oscillators, 1 AASR and 1 Filter section. The Analog has it's own grid editor. Very minimal: you can only set the keys and the length of the notes. A Baseline (r): 4 waveforms to chose from, a filter section and its step by step editor. The Bassline is certainly the module that I like the least in this App... To finish, 1 Drum Machine. Its only "shaping" parameter available for an instrument is a Punch button. As I said, RD4 is a 4 track workstation. The thing really cool is that you can use any of this instrument in any track... You can use it with 4 Drum Machine, or 3 Bassline and 1 analog... As you like! You also have a Mixer, 4 Effects (Distortion, Phaser, Delay and Reverb). one Send for each track but 4 send 4 each Drum instruments. A Pattern Mode also allows you to play a pattern for each track (8 patterns can be saved for each instrument) from 1 to 2, to 3, and so on. 2 random modes are also available. To conclude, the App is very well done but... The Analog Synthesizer is really cool. It is the module I prefer in this App. You have enough parameters to shape your sound as you like. The Bassline, as I said, is the one I love the least... Not fat enough, for me... The 2 Drum Machines are cool, but it would be nice to be able to create a custom kit... The live record mode is really cool, but more sharing features. At this moment, we only have: iTunes File Sharing,SoundCloud and Dropbox. Ok, it's cool, but I really need to have the AudioCopy / Paste at very least. Hard to rate it, ... Because RD4 is very well done, very simple to understand, but I want more! :-) At the same time, it is only version 1 of this App... I'm sure that it has the potential to be a Killer App...
